Music Video REMAKE

Analysis of a previous students music video
This video uses the disjuncture structure, the video has little connection to the lyrics, however the video is still very effective in its purpose. There are very obvious edits used, many jump cuts and special effects, like the shot of the breath being reversed back into her mouth furthermore there is a very obvious colour filter used to add a little style to the video, it is made very effective because of its consistency throughout the video. This video deviates from the usual way women are portrayed in music videos, there is no dismemberment and no "skimpy" clothing. They have a clear style they were going for with the artist, very fashion forward yet conservative and there is a clear colour scheme of blacks, browns and creams.
Transition from AS to A2.
During AS media i picked up a variety of skills which i feel will help me during the A2 year.
These skills consist of:
- How to hold the camera effectively in order to get the best shots.
- How to edit videos using final cut pro
- How to use many software's such as photoshop, final cut pro, garage band etc.
- rules of filming.
One of my main challenges was keeping up with the blogging which i have learnt from and will use my time more wisely.
The skills i think i will pick up in A2 is research skills such as researching into audiences and being able to plan effectively as i will have to plan for my music video.

Laura Mulvey Gender Representation
"In a world ordered by sexual imbalance, pleasure in looking has been split between active/male and passive/female. The determining male gaze projects its fantasy onto the female figure which is styled accordingly" (Laura Mulvey, 1992)
This quote tells a very powerful message about gender representation in music videos, she is stating that women in music videos are represented as objects of male desire, the men being the active lookers and the women playing the passive role of being objectified. Often this leads to the use of dismemberment to show the female form, this means showing close ups of different parts of a woman's body.
This type of representation is often found in hip hop and rap videos.

Research of an artist in the folk genre
Mumford & Sons Babel
This is the album cover for Mumford & Sons album Babel, the cover is heavily focused on the artists, it is clear due to the motion blurred background, with the artists in perfect focus in the foreground. They are all dressed appropriately to the genre they fall under. There are a lot of blues, beiges and browns in the colour scheme. The title and artists name are in a the same curly, fancy font.
Mumford & Sons - Lover of the light
This music video has the same style choices and colour scheme, it has an air of english country gent, which is the bands style, coupled with the scenery choice of being in the countryside away from the city, which also follows along with their folk styling.
The key features in these two media texts are the upperclass country styling and the colour scheme.
Andrew Goodwins theory on music videos
Andrew Goodwins theory on music videos :
There are three types of relations between songs and videos : illustration, amplification and disjuncture.
illustration: when music videos tell a story that link to lyrics.
Amplification: when music videos introduce new meanings that do not contradict lyrics but add layers of meaning.
disjuncture: is where there is little connection between video and lyrics.
Example of illustration: Krept and Konan - my story. song is about how konans family were attacked by gun men and in the video the events are acted out.
Example of amplification: Justin timberlake - mirrors. the video illustrates the lyrics in a complex and exaggerated manner
Example of disjuncture: One direction - got to be you. video is of the band members taking different forms of transport and just miming the lyrics. a video which does not link to the meaning of the song

Previous students video.
My review of a previous students work.
There are many things i liked about this video created, one of which are the shots and the framing, another thing is the atmosphere the video and that the audience could feel as if they were there, i also liked the use of editing at beginning. I also like that the camera is at an angle that makes us feel as if we are the body and that is what we see as its in the middle of the crowd keeping the audience engaged.
The use of fonts throughout the middle of the clip worked successfully in my point of view and the timing of it did go well with the beat.

Andrew Goodwin: Dancing In The Distraction Factory
Andrew Goodwin states that music videos do not follow the usual narrative structure that is commonly used in films and novels. The singer in a pop video can be both the narrator and character in the video. This allows the music video to break the fourth wall which is when the artist is singing directly to the camera to involve the viewer in the performance.
Much like the song the video will repeat shots as the song repeats choruses and lines.
Genres have signifiers which the viewers will expect to see in a video for example the way that hip hop videos present women as objects of male desire.
However music videos try to appeal to as wide an audience as possible without alienating the core audience.
Illustration is when the video tells the story of the lyrics.
Amplification is when a video has something to do with the lyrics and also adds new meaning to the lyrics.
Disjuncture is when a video has little to nothing to do with the lyrics, like a music video of a band performing in a studio.

Amplification
Disjuncture

Song Choice and How ours will differ from it.
How our song will differ from the original video.
Passenger - Let Her Go.
This is the official video for our song choice, This video includes our artist Passenger being the artist and character in the video, he is performing to an audience in a big hall on a stage, our video will differ as we already have a few ideas in mind such starting off with greenery, in a very calm atmosphere as the song starts off like that, throughout the song we will have a base track of many people gathered up with lighters in the air whilst its the night to create a calming mood, this will most probably be played at the calmest time throughout the song, when the beat is soft and gentle.

Blogging on Laura Mulvey.
Blogging Task on Laura Mulvey.
Laura Mulvey's theory on representation includes the 'Male Gaze'. The Male Gaze is a theory that women in music videos are represented in certain ways to attract the males attention, the women are dismembered they are the ones being looked at and the males are the ones whom are looking, it is shown in many music videos, there are many close up on the women body and faces to attract the male viewers attention.
Here is a video that supports the theory of the Male Gaze.
This video has a variety of shots that support the idea of the male gaze. This method is usually used to keep the viewed attracted to the video and to come back and watch it again rather than once, this then promotes the artist even more.

Blogging Task on Carol Vernallis.
Carol Vernallis - Blogging Task.
Carol Vernallis studied editing and camerawork closely in music videos.
Carol observed that edits in music videos come much more frequently than in film, many stand out as disjuncture and the editing seems rhythmic basis.
The usual rules of 'continuity' editing (found in classic broadcast fiction) are broken in order to draw attention to what is on the screen.
Edits may be really obvious to draw attention to themselves, such as wipes and special effects added.
Jump cuts are often used in music videos.
A master shot (base track) is frequently used to give video structure.
The camera may move just in time with the music.
My chosen examples - Eminem - Berserk, Wretch 32 - Don't Go and Katy Perry - Firework.
Analysis of music video conventions.
Structure and Narrative Types.
This is a piece of work i had to do for homework, i had to pick three music videos i recently watched and had to understand Goodwin's ideas around structure. I had to differentiate all three artists as they all had differences and a few things in common.
These are the three artists and the music videos i have chosen to analyse.
Order - Miley Cyrus - Wrecking Ball , Eminem - Berserk, Wretch 32 - Don't Go.
Looking at the Genre - Analysing stills from the music video.
Looking at Genre
Analysing stills from the music video.
This is a piece of work we did in class, we analysed two different videos which were Micheal Jackson and Arctic Monkeys, we had to identify the differences between the two difference genres and how it was shown in the music videos.

The Function of Music Videos.
Purpose of Music Videos.
One major purpose is to promote the song but also the artist, it also allows the artist to increase sales in departments such as tickets, merchandise, downloads and also hard copy sales.
The video will also allow the audience to understand the music video as many music videos are illustration therefore the viewers could understand the lyrics easier.
Appeal of music videos - the audience like looking at the artist, the location, the narratives, the audience could also keep up to date with the artist, some support the male gaze theory, also many fans would want to emulate their style or image and mainly its entertaining!
There is also three other purposes with music videos for example how it portray the video, lyric, character(s) or artist to the viewing audience. The three types of music videos are illustrative, amplification and disjunction.
Here are examples of three of the different types :
Amplification.

Disjunction.
Letter to request copyright clearance
Dear Sir/ Madam,
I am a student of A Level Media Studies at City and Islington College in
London and for my Advanced Portfolio I will be working in a group to produce a
promotional package for the release of a single track by a British artist. I
would like to request permission to use the song "Let her go by Passenger" for
this project.
The finished project will not be made available publicly and will be used
solely for coursework purposes. The holder of the original copyright will be
fully acknowledged in the finished project.
If you do not hold the rights for this song I should be grateful if you could
forward this request to the appropriate person, or let me know the contact
details of the person who would deal with these matters.

Passenger - Let Her Go Lyrics
"Let Her Go"
Well you only need the light when it's burning low
Only miss the sun when it starts to snow
Only know you love her when you let her go
Only know you've been high when you're feeling low
Only hate the road when you’re missin' home
Only know you love her when you let her go
And you let her go
Staring at the bottom of your glass
Hoping one day you'll make a dream last
But dreams come slow and they go so fast
You see her when you close your eyes
Maybe one day you'll understand why
Everything you touch surely dies
But you only need the light when it's burning low
Only miss the sun when it starts to snow
Only know you love her when you let her go
Only know you've been high when you're feeling low
Only hate the road when you're missin' home
Only know you love her when you let her go
Staring at the ceiling in the dark
Same old empty feeling in your heart
'Cause love comes slow and it goes so fast
Well you see her when you fall asleep
But never to touch and never to keep
'Cause you loved her too much
And you dived too deep
Well you only need the light when it's burning low
Only miss the sun when it starts to snow
Only know you love her when you let her go
Only know you've been high when you're feeling low
Only hate the road when you're missin' home
Only know you love her when you let her go
And you let her go (oh, oh, ooh, oh no)
And you let her go (oh, oh, ooh, oh no)
Will you let her go?
'Cause you only need the light when it's burning low
Only miss the sun when it starts to snow
Only know you love her when you let her go
Only know you've been high when you're feeling low
Only hate the road when you're missin' home
Only know you love her when you let her go
'Cause you only need the light when it's burning low
Only miss the sun when it starts to snow
Only know you love her when you let her go
Only know you've been high when you're feeling low
Only hate the road when you're missin' home
Only know you love her when you let her go
And you let her go
Shortlist of Artists and songs
The song choice we narrowed it down to was Let her go - Passenger, we chose this song because it is not very popular for the youth generation, furthermore the music video that accompanied the song wasn't very iconic or memorable and we therefore believe we can create a better video for their song. Also this genre of music doesn't fall into our comfort zone so we believe that we can challenge ourselves more and create a better video by reaching out of our comfort zone.

Previous Student Video Review
This video had good use of narrative and structure. The camera was used
to great effect, with different angles and shots. Good use of camerawork and
movement keeps the viewer interested and at the edge of their seat. This is
also achieved through good editing, with a range of fast and slow shots, and
change of shots in time with the beat of the music.
In terms of what we as an audience feel, we are very much constantly
looked at by the artist. This relates to and reinforces Andrew Goodwin's
theory. The video has been built around the song, the artist is both the
narrator and the main character in the video and the singer is constantly
looking directly at the camera, breaking the fourth wall. However this
effectively makes the audience part of the video, which helps maintain their
attention.
This video is self-governing and has little connection between the
lyrics and the video, therefore making it a disjuncture video.
