Andrew Goodwin: Dancing In The Distraction Factory

Andrew Goodwin states that music videos do not follow the usual narrative structure that is commonly used in films and novels. The singer in a pop video can be both the narrator and character in the video. This allows the music video to break the fourth wall which is when the artist is singing directly to the camera to involve the viewer in the performance.
Much like the song the video will repeat shots as the song repeats choruses and lines.
Genres have signifiers which the viewers will expect to see in a video for example the way that hip hop videos present women as objects of male desire.
However music videos try to appeal to as wide an audience as possible without alienating the core audience.

Music videos come in three categories:
Illustration is when the video tells the story of the lyrics.
Amplification is when a video has something to do with the lyrics and also adds new meaning to the lyrics.
Disjuncture is when a video has little to nothing to do with the lyrics, like a music video of a band performing in a studio.

Examples:

Amplification
