Laura Mulvey Gender Representation

"In a world ordered by sexual imbalance, pleasure in looking has been split between active/male and passive/female. The determining male gaze projects its fantasy onto the female  figure which is styled accordingly" (Laura Mulvey, 1992)

This quote tells a very powerful message about gender representation in music videos, she is stating that women in music videos are represented as objects of male desire, the men being the active lookers and the women playing the passive role of being objectified. Often this leads to the use of dismemberment to show the female form, this means showing close ups of different parts of a woman's body.

This type of representation is often found in hip hop and rap videos.
